Overview
The Canon EOS R5 Mark II mirrorless camera is just the latest in an incredibly versatile lineup, successor to the EOS R5, bringing a host of new features that make this the most powerful EOS 5 series camera ever. It all begins with an all-new 45MP sensor, back-illuminated, and stacked for extremely fast readout speeds, which in turn enable a 30 fps electronic shutter. Then it builds on that with major focus improvements, increased video capabilities, and much more.
DIGIC Accelerator
The DIGIC Accelerator chip is an all-new front-end processor, developed by Canon to augment the power of its proven DIGIC X processor. This DIGIC Accelerator handles processing that makes so many of the new features possible in this camera, freeing the DIGIC X chip to focus solely on image processing, again contributing to incredible speed. The DIGIC Accelerator directly processes large amounts of data from the image sensor, performing actions such as AF detection for measuring exposure metering calculations, enabling eye-control focus, subject identification, and tracking, even deep learning with features like neural upscaling and noise reduction.
Totally new Sensor
It has the same number of pixels as in the EOS R5, yet this is an entirely new 45MP sensor design. The stacked and back-illuminated sensor is the first full-frame one of it's kind, allowing for 30fps RAW or full-res JPEG stills from electronic shutter. This increases read-out speeds from the sensor, and as a result reduces rolling shutter distortion drastically. In the electronic shutter, pressing halfway begins to save images and a full press writes that last ½-second to card; pre-continuous shooting is now possible.
Time to focus
Subject tracking also works with the Canon R5 Mark II, and it boasts a lot of new autofocus features used in its flagship EOS R1.QRect The ability to keep a target in focus (even when it goes behind something briefly during shooting) with subject tracking. Additionally, the R5 Mark II features Eye Control AF to accelerate placing your active AF Area using Canon's second-generation version of its classic technology (first seen in Eye Controlled Focus on EOS A2 or Es). As long as you've calibrated the viewfinder, just look; focus on what you are looking at and press the AF activation button.
Action priority
Once again, thanks to the extra camera processing power of that DIGIC Accelerator chip we've been able to make Action priority AF an option. But this new focusing technology also determines movement and other particulars in order to choose who the subject is so that every action shot you take will be perfect! Currently this feature works with football, volleyball and basketball. Cancel Auto Verbose: body, related because of ball tracking Action priority (camera can recognize specific people and tracks them using the same technology) along with just movement tracking on top of everything else means as part-and-parcel w/eye-control AF assist to get you your action shot when things are moving fast.
Subject tracking of People and Animals*2 using Deep Learning Technology.
When paired with that 45MP sensor, it enables internal recording of DCI or UHD 8K video up to 60 frames per second as part of the camera's headline spec. Additionally, there is a new menu which is now Cinema EOS terminology-friendly making this camera's video features more accessible and translated; perfect for Cinematic Productions that would be led by other cameras in the lineup like an EOS C70 or even something as high spec as filming with Quadruple CF Express (Type A) Modules ONLY from Canon themselves e.g. An all-Canon Events team… You can also record RAW video with 8K resolution, and an S-RAW option has been added for recording of up to 4K RAW videos.
And RAW video recording is now 14-bit, providing an even wider spectrum of tonalities. For users who do not require RAW video, you can shoot in a wide range of MP4-style video settings and resolutions including Full HD (up to 240 frames per second), sound-enabled/8K at up to 120fps or menu-choosable record modes. It has Canon Log 2 and C-Log3. It also enhances the performance capabilities with new/advanced functions including full-size HDMI port on camera, Waveform monitors and up to 24-bit x4 channel audio recording.
More Power
As the new EOS R5 Mark II is more powerful than its predecessors, it needs slightly more juice due to all of those newly added features and hence ships with a higher amperage battery; The LP-E6P. Although it has the same physical dimensions as previous LP batteries, a white stripe and white Canon logo on top distinguish this new battery from earlier iterations. The battery will be compatible with older Canon mirrorless and even DSLR cameras, though those cameras need a firmware update to support the new cells.
* Canon LP-E6N and LP-E6NH battery packs can be used in the R5 Mark II camera, but with some significant limitations - - especially Wi-Fi connection, and for video recording. Also, continuous Drive speeds with mechanical or first-curtain electronic shutter will be reduced. This applies to any battery in any of the optional battery grips as well.
Bright and clear EVF
A new Electronic viewfinder is now the same 0.5-inch 5.76 million dot OLED EVF you would find in the EOS R3 with approx. 100% coverage, 0.76x magnification, and an eyepoint of approx. 24mm. Some of the EVF lenses inside the body are sealed in an airtight structure making it difficult for the viewfinder to fog up.
Weather resistance
The EOS R5 Mark II is dust- and weather-resistant, with the same performance as the EOS R5, even when using one of the new optional grips.
Dual Card Slots for CFexpress** and UHS-II SD Memory Cards***
Whether you are shooting photos every day, or are recording 8K videos, the EOS R5 Mark II camera can capture an incredible amount of images through its super high-speed CFexpress dual card slots. Plus a UHS-II SD*** card slot is also provided at your disposal. The two card slots can be utilized for separate recording of still photos and movies, main and proxy recording of movies, and recording to multiple cards.
** Type B compatible. With firmware v.2.0.0 and above, camera can accept CFexpress cards over 2TB in capacity. With these cards, the camera can write to the first 2TB (only) of total card capacity.
*** Some types of data cannot be saved on the SD memory card.
Improved Image Stabilization
The EOS R5 Mark II has the same 5-axis in-body stabilization as the original R5 that provides optimal image stabilization, and uses coordinated IS in conjunction with RF lenses that have built-in IS. Roll operation range is now approx. 2xthat of the EOS R3, and when a compatible lens is used*3, the CMOS sensor suppresses blurring at the periphery of the image, and even at the center. Additionally, the IS algorithm has been updated and a new mechanical design now allows for 8.5 stops of coordinated correction at the center, and 7.5 stops at the periphery*1*2*3
